Less than a week left. Poke your head over the cubicle wall and invite a veteran to lunch.
Restaurant chains get into the game…
All week I’ve heard Applebee’s advertising their Veterans Eat Free program for Veteran’s Day. Kudo’s to Applebee’s. I’m sure there are many other restaurants offering a similar deal.

Veteran's Day is Fast Approaching
Veteran’s Day is Fast Approaching, and it’s time to remind people before it’s too late. Taking a Vet to Lunch is a simple and effective way of showing appreciation for the risk and sacrifices that they have made in service of their country.
Facebook, Blogs, as well as traditional media outlets such as local TV and Radio stations are great ways to spread the word. A 15 second blurb on a popular morning radio show could mean hundreds or thousands of Veterans are honored, on a very personal level, by the friends and family whom they have served.
A quick letter, phone call, or email to your politician of choice could get a mention in a campaign speech.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to you in hopes of raising awareness for a program called Take A Vet to Lunch. The idea started on Veteran’s Day of 2008 as a means of honoring US Military Veterans on Veteran’s Day This year, we are hoping to spread this idea to a much wider audience.
Take A Vet to Lunch is a very simple idea and requires little planning. On Veteran’s Day, walk up to that Veteran with whom you work every single day and offer to take him/her to lunch. It will only cost you a few dollars, yet it allows you to show your appreciation for their sacrifice on a day intended to mark that sacrifice.

Promote TakeAVetToLunch at your place of worship.
Having very little experience with promotions such as this, I have sent a few letters to newspapers, and emailed a prominent radio host or two. Thus far, I have seen very little success.
I have spoken with the minister of programs at our church, and she finds it to be an entirely appropriate topic for our weekly newsletter to parishioners.
There is very little time left…only TWO Sundays left before Veteran’s Day. If your church has a weekly newsletter, please, submit a notice about TakeAVetToLunch.org, and what it is that we are trying to do.

Promoting – Take A Vet To Lunch 2009
As Veteran’s Day approaches, I have written letters to the editor of USA Today, and ManCow hoping to get a little exposure for this simple idea. Any help in promoting TakeAVetToLunch 2009 would be greatly appreciated. Posts on Facebook, MySpace, etc. can go a long way to spread the word.

Take a Vet to Lunch
Last year, like so many before, Veterans’ Day snuck up on me very quickly. To be honest, I didn’t realize it was Veterans’ Day until I heard ManCow talking about it on the radio during my morning commute to work. As it turns out, there is quite a high percentage of US Military Veterans where I work, and I found it almost embarrassing that I had let it sneak up on me like that…again. So, I pondered the issue all morning… What could I do to show my appreciation for the hard work, risks, and sacrifices that my co-workers had made? Furthermore, what could I do that expressed my appreciation without being overly ceremonial…that’s not really my style. So, I looked across the isle at Kevin, a former Navy man, and thought to myself…”self, take Kevin to lunch!”.
At 10:30AM, after he agreed to allow me the privilege of thanking him for his service with a $10 lunch, it occurred to me that it was so easy, and such a simple gesture that it really didn’t take any planning at all. In fact, even on such short notice anyone could do it….so out went my email to everyone that worked at our site.
To my surprise, the whole thing was a great success. Every single Veteran at our facility was treated to a thoughtful and appreciative lunch. In fact, people were arguing over who was buying lunch for whom.
As Memorial day passed this year, I began to think of this year’s upcoming Veteran’s day and my plan to continue the “Take a Vet to Lunch” tradition started last year. It was at this point that I thought I should spread the word. My plan is to start with a web site, some simple promotion, and hopefully, by Veterans’ Day 2009, every living US Military Veteran will be taken to lunch. My plan is to assemble some features of the web site that will help local organizers and send email reminders as the day approaches, while fostering a community and forum for other ideas to honor our vets.
It’s a very simple thing. It’s appreciative without being overly ceremonial, and simple enough that most Vets will accept it without too much fuss. I have found most Vets to be humble in their acceptance of any fanfare for what they consider to be a dutiful task, while themselves being almost aggressively thankful to others who have made similar sacrifices.
If you register on this site, I will try to send an email reminder so that you can carry out your own “Take a Vet to Lunch” program this year. My plan is to post ready-to-print fliers and promotional materials here for people to use at their own place of work.
